GUISEDO YOU SEE WHAT I SEEBECAUSESERIOUSLY
OMG. It’s soooo… Epic.
Because it helps me to visually put stuff down while working on THatF. Here’s Loki to model Jotunn markings for us!
The designs formed by a Jotunn’s ridges are unique to every individual, but, like human fingerprints, the ridges are categorized into designs based upon general shape and location and given meaning. Like constellations, sometimes there’s a story behind them.
Male Jotnar exist in a caste system, their rank and occupation known at birth based on their markings. (Females do not have markings and are born equal; social status is dependant upon the occupation she chooses. As such, status has no meaning in marriage and men and women of any social standing can marry whom they choose. The rank of their children also has no affect upon them. The exception to this rule is the King’s wife, who does not become the Queen until she has birthed a viable heir to the throne.) The complete ‘base markings’ of an infant are noted and his role in life declared before his parents. (More ridges develop as the child grows into adulthood, and more can be added manually by scarification or tattooing, though these are usually only for aesthetic appeal.) A man may be born with multiple symbols, but he will be placed into his occupation by the highest ‘ranking’ set of marks. His placement within that particular status will depend on his other markings.
For example: priests outrank warriors who outrank artisans. Two boys are born, the first with a combination of priest and warrior markings and the second with priest and artisan markings. Both will be trained as priests and receive the benefits of that rank, but within their order the first boy will outrank the second.
The King and his heirs must possess all the important markings: royal (both sets), priest, warrior (officer and soldier sets), artisan, merchant, and laborer. Servants have either no or only minor markings.
One of the greatest forms of violation among the Jotnar is defacing another man’s markings. The punishment is either stripping the assaulter of all rank and placing him at thrall status or death depending upon the damage inflicted on the victim relative to their rank.
and placing him at thrall status or death depending upon the damage inflicted on the victim relative to their rank.

Crown: (not visible) Royal markings made of lines, chevrons, or whorls over the top of the head. Sometimes present in those outside the royal line, but without the Ring and other major symbols is treated as minor markings.

Horns: Originally a major symbol of the sorcerers (though not all sorcerers had them and they are sometimes present on others), it is now considered a minor marking.

Crown of Ymir: A combination of Crown and Horns, specifically when the Crown markings form directly into Horns. Old sorcerers’ markings that still retain a sense of power among the populace but treated as a rare minor marking.

Belgemir’s Tears: Minor markings sometimes attributed to priests and artisans. Legend will tell that when Bergelmir, grandson of Ymir and survivor of the Aesir slaughter, rode to safety on a wave of blood, he cried tears so hot they scalded his skin. His descendants bear the marks of this tragedy.

Claws: Warrior markings possessed by all military ranks from soldier to general. Claws can be small and found only on the hands or stretching up the forearm, and in the shape of lines, curves, or chevrons. Whorls or dots alone to not count as Claws unless accompanying the previous three.

Mantle: Warrior markings separating the officers from the soldiers. While all of warrior rank are given the same basic training, those bearing the Mantle are specifically groomed for leadership. (Those who prove incapable often mar their own markings in shame, while a soldier who proves himself a skilled leader in battle may have Mantle markings scarred or tattooed on him by other officers.) The Mantle can be made of any pattern save dots alone so long as it covers the collarbone and upper arms.

Ring: Royal markings found on the upper arm. When not paired with the Crown markings, Ring often represents relatives of the royal line, such as the descendants of the King’s brother for several generations. Bearers of the Ring and other major markings without the Crown often rule cities, outposts, and colonies on other worlds under the King’s command.

Wings: Priest markings made up of any pattern (save dots alone) that cover the sides and at least part of the back. Wings are a rare pattern leading to the small number of priests and their status over warriors.

Heart: Artisan markings of any pattern found on the front of the body between the upper chest and the navel. Despite not ranking highly among the social statuses, the Jotnar believe that the center of any society are the creators, hence the significance of the Heart markings.

The merchant and laborer markings are often found on the back and legs. Small markings, such as the ones found on Loki’s chin and beside his eyes, have no meaning beyond the aesthetic, though they do complete the marking set to make each man unique.
